The Midlands Meander Education Project team live interesting lives in the hills and valleys of the Midlands, adding enthusiasm, energy, colour and magic to their activities everyday.

Bhekisile the Beetle aka Louine Boothway, the original Bug, lives in a secret garden in Howick.  Her greatest joy is a long table laden with good food and wine, surrounded by special friends and great conversation. Her butternut soup is legendary.  Local music is a passion easily indulged in the Midlands where wonderful musicians abound.

Siza the Spider aka Jessica Dreamtime lives in a flourishing food garden surrounded by butterflies, bees and beetles, where she gives thanks for her good fortune often. She believes that everyone has the right to wholesome, organic food and spends many happy hours working in food gardens and sharing harvest celebrations.  She loves drumming and Raw Food, sharing her delicious solar herbal teas and solar sprouted seeds at every opportunity.

Once upon a time a small bug was born into a BIG family and could have been overlooked. Luckily, Laila Smith met a Beetle (with sunshine in her eyes) who introduced her to a Butterfly (who painted rainbows everywhere she went) and a Spider (who was in love with the Skye and in cahoots with the moon), and a whole heap of other nunus! All of the Bugs could see the light shining from her BIG HEART and so they crowned her SuperBug. They knew that they would be friends for ever, turning cartwheels, having picnics and even adding pink to their list of favourite colours!

Doodlebug aka Tinks Fowler lives a very creative life in a beautiful old farmhouse in the Dargle where there is often a little Nguni calf to bottle feed outside the kitchen door. Jeffrey the sheep provides wool which is hand spun and dyed to make gorgeous coloured knitting wool. She loves gathering veggies from the garden and fresh eggs to cook up delicious family feasts. A long walk with the dogs to see how the Blue Cranes are doing down near the dam, is her favourite way to start the day.

Gugu the Grasshopper aka Charlene Russell, is crazy about wildlife. She loves nothing better than watching Knysna Loeries flash past her window, squishing about a wetland or listening to the frogs croak on moonlit nights. On sunny days she can be found building an outdoor clay oven in her garden. She is excellent at cartwheels, writing stories and making hummus.

Masechaba the Mayfly aka Éidín Griffin is an Irish permaculture princess with very grubby hands and feet. Most days she is up to her armpits in compost, horses and children and whirls about encouraging everyone to have fun in the mud. Since building an organic home on her own, she has relocated to Tweedie where she shares her experience with anyone who will listen, dances at every opportunity and continues to save and share seeds (particularly heirloom vegetable varieties).

Charles the Chameleon aka Nkanyiso Ndlela lives in ‘Maritzbug but escapes to the Balgowan countryside at every opportunity. He is passionate about Wetlands and shares his enthusiasm with the local children.  “Amaxhaphozi ayimvelo, angumgogodla wempilo nomthamo wamanzi.” he says. On weekends he dances a lot and relaxes with friends, playing pool at the Flo Lounge.

Cindi iCimbi (the Caterpillar aka Ntombenhle Mtambo) makes the best vetkoek in Mpophomeni township (and fabulous ijeqe too). She loves singing, spending time with her kids and harvesting spinach from the veggie garden flourishing in her back yard.  Determined to feed the world, she has begun creating a food garden on derelict wasteland in her neighbourhood with the help of enthusiastic local kids.

Cebo the Cricket is Julia Colvin, Queen of the Midlands single-track, often spotted whizzing though the plantations or along country roads with her favourite two wheeled companion. After travelling extensively, she is determined to re-grow her Midlands roots, learn to produce food organically and live a wholesome, carbon neutral life. She has a natural affinity to animals and spends much time tending to the needs of furred and feathered creatures.

Bongi the Butterfly aka Nikki Brighton lives in a Magic Cottage beside the mist-belt forest with her African dog, Dizzy. She is passionate about indigenous flora and spends time plotting the demise of Alien plants. Determined to live as lightly as possible, she gathers wild greens from the veld during long walks and cooks up delicious meals in her Sunstove.   She can often be found sitting on her verandah with a pot of Darjeeling tea listening to the birds.

Besides the Bugs mentioned above, we also have a number of "Honorary Bugs" who add a little extra magic to our programme.
